Even if you are a winning poker player, you will experience downswings
and periods of bad luck.
In order avoid “going bust” it’s important that
you have the proper bankroll for the limit that you play. A good
guideline is 200 to 300 “big bets” of money set aside
for poker for the limit which you play at.
For example-- if you play $1/2 limit texas hold’em, $2 is
considered the “big bet”. So to safely play at this
level, with minimal risk of “busting”, you should have
at least $400. If you go on a bad luck streak, be prepared to drop
down to a lower limit.
As your bankroll increases, you can start thinking about moving
up to higher limit games—but don’t ever be too stubborn
to move back down if you are unsuccessful.
A mistake that many players make is to play bigger games in order
to make up for their losses. Always remember that if you are losing
money at your current limit, then you will most likely lose money
at a higher limit. The process to becoming a good poker player is
a slow one.
